Why Virtualization will Democratize Hardware

Hi everyone, my name is Jama and I am the founder of Sahara Cloud. Our mission is to democratize hardware and make it more accessible to everyone through virtual prototyping.

I first started thinking about ways to improve the hardware development process when I was helping hardware startups build their embedded systems after graduating as an Electrical Engineer from Caltech. As we all know, building hardware is hard – Hardware is more expensive, slower to build, and harder to maintain – all because of the physical nature of hardware. There is a reason why there are 10x more software startups compared to hardware startups.

Unfortunately, the process to build hardware and firmware is still stuck back in the 90s, and that is exactly what I want to change. While research labs and semiconductor companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Xilinx are driving innovation in silicon technology itself, what I want to do is make embedded development more collaborative, accessible, and bring it out of the dark. I want this industry to see all of the advancement and improvements that software development has seen over the past few decades.

My vision with Sahara Cloud is to create a platform that fosters engineering inclusivity within the space of embedded products and physical devices. There are a lot of nuances to hardware development, but the same thing could have been said about software development a few decades earlier. Software development and the internet used to be exactly the same – proprietary, complex, and definitely not collaborative. Over the past two decades, culture shifts towards virtualization, collaboration, and open-source have paved the way for an upwelling of innovation in software. Even previously “walled garden” companies like Microsoft are being forced to embrace this change in the software world (and for the better of everyone).

We built Sahara Cloud with the mission to democratize hardware. We want to remove the first barrier to building hardware by making the process virtual, so anyone can build a robot or a smart speaker without spending a ton of money.
